These cards were sold in 1863-1864 to help raise money to pay for schools for emancipated slaves in New Orleans. The organizers realized that the sympathies that people would have for children who looked white but had been slaves was going to be greater than the sympathy they might have for black-skinned children.

The Jump Off: Music meets Live Art.

Join Chester Marie Productions as they kick off their 2nd Jump Off! The first Jump Off featured Spoken Word and Live Art, this month we are featuring Music and Live Art. The event will be hosted by Nicole Townsend.

The feature artist of the night is Claire Brame, a print maker studying at UNC Asheville. Her finely detailed art features ordinary objects juxtaposed in unique ways that will make you take a closer look.

Ernie Mapp and Tiffany Gill will also be displaying their work, and creating live art. Ernie Mapp is an Asheville local whose art captures every moment that words can not sum up. His work is thought provoking, solid, and moving. Tiffany Gill, a game designer here in Asheville, intertwines graphic art, politics, and the pureness of everyday life to create pieces that embody strength, power, and growth.

Musicians TBA.

16+ $5.00

*** Upon the artists and performers requests please private message Nicole Townsend if you would like to get a media pass in order to photograph this event. Photos taken via cell phones, for personal use is permitted.

Our friends at Mellow Mushroom are hooking us up! So here is the deal: Bring one “school supply” item and you’ll get $1 off of your cover fee for the night. Bring in 5 “school supply” items or more and you’ll not only get $1 off of your cover charge, but you will also be entered to win a $25 Mellow Mushroom Gift card, which will be given out at the event.

All supplies will be donated to young people here in Asheville. Some places have notebooks on sale for $.17!
